Ravaged by years of war and political instability, the Democratic Republic of Congo is today one of the poorest countries in the world. There is a striking contrast between this poverty and the immense wealth the country possesses.
This wealth consists of scarce mineral resources such as diamonds, gold, copper, etc. and abundant forest resources, diverse animal species and vast fertile agricultural lands for crops. Several members of the Dominican family are involved alongside the most vulnerable and underprivileged with a view to accompanying them both in the promotion of human rights and through civic and electoral education. In the news of today, little is heard of Congo; it’s one of the world’s “forgotten emergencies”.
Every December (Advent) is a Dominican Month for Peace in order to promote global solidarity with Dominican brothers and sisters who are trying to bring hope in situations of violence and war. This year the Democratic Republic of Congo will be at the center. In the attached letter the Master of the Order and the International Dominican Commission for Justice and Peace (IDCJP) are appealing to all the branches of the Order for solidarity. Hopefully all Lay Fraternities will find ways to encourage and support our Dominican brothers and sisters in Congo.
The letter makes suggestions of ways to express this solidarity: by prayer, preaching, exhibition of works of art, financial contributions, contact with the local DR Congo embassy.
Every action – even the smallest one – can help the solidarity amongst us all to continue to grow and enable our preaching mission to have a greater impact in bringing the Good News to our world!
The Master and the IDCJP will be very grateful to receive information from everyone who took initiatives in the interest of solidarity! In the letter you will find the addresses to which you can send your news.
