Acts of 10th European Assembly of Lay Dominican Fraternities
The European council of Lay Dominican Fraternities (ECDLF) appeals to the Dominican lay fraternities to make a concrete and active commitment in welcoming Iraqi refugee families and responding to the various calls of the threatened populations.
This urgent call is initiated by the chapter of the French Dominican laity, which took place from the 22nd to the 25th of August. There were almost 700 Dominican lay brothers and sisters in Iraq and their situation is particularly complex and difficult.
After leaving Mosul, leaving all their belongings, they fled to Karakoch, to be protected by the Kurdish army. Before the Islamists advance, and in the light of little interest for them, the Kurds have left the city, forcing to flee to Kurdistan.
Their situation is complex and difficult. They feel they are treated as second class humans. They have precarious conditions of housing and an excessive cost and the Islamic state has seized their identity papers.
The chapter of the Dominican laity of the Province of France therefore took a resolution to commit themselves materially to help Iraqi lay people. They call the Dominican lay fraternities to make a concrete and active commitment in welcoming Iraqi refugee families and responding to the various calls of the threatened populations. They consider it their duty to respond to the appeal of the Church asking us to help all the victims of the persecutions.
The French lay Dominicans are writing:
“Today we have to collect funds to help those who wish and are able to leave the country, pay for the journey, but also to accommodate them and feed them until they gain political refugee status, and so receive the help associated with this status. As far as you are able, can you take similar initiatives to help them, or to help us to collect donations thanks to the following link of the Province of France?”
